The story of Popham’s Arboretum begins with F. H. Sam Popham, a British planter who arrived in Sri Lanka as a Royal Navy officer. Like many others, he later became a tea planter. But unlike most, he listened closely to the land.

In 1963, Sam Popham started something unusual. Instead of planting new trees aggressively, he chose a softer approach — allowing nature to heal itself. This method later became known as the “pop-up method.” It didn’t introduce foreign plant species. It simply protected what already existed, removing harmful undergrowth and letting native trees grow freely.

For this work, Sam Popham received Sri Lanka’s first conservation award in 1992 — a rare honor, and a well-earned one.

When he retired in 1999, he handed the land to Mr. J. Amarasingha, who continues as the caretaker, protecting the spirit of the arboretum just as carefully as the trees themselves.

The Walk Up to the Temple

These tips are most important for you as a traveler.The walk to the cave entrance takes about 10–15 minutes.But it may be dependent on your energy. It’s a paved path with steps,now you have three ways but you can find the ticket counter in only one place and along the way, you’ll often see monkeys resting on the rocks or trees. The climb isn’t difficult, but it can feel warm around midday.
This is why I always suggest:
• Visiting early morning or late afternoon
• Carrying a bottle of water
• Wearing comfortable footwear-normal slippers are ok

After a trek in the Knuckles mountains, dipping your feet in Telgamu Oya is the best reward. It flows over smooth rocks into little natural pools. You’ll hear it before you see it — the sound of water rushing down the rocks. Huluganga is alive, especially after the rains. The road there winds through tiny villages and thick forest. Every bend has a new view, and I always stop for photos. Nature feels strong and proud here.

And when they learn how we use these spices in daily cooking and medicine, they’re amazed.

Near Elkaduwa,some outside of matale city, this estate mixes tea fields with vegetable gardens. I shared tea with an old farmer who said the land “speaks” to him. That stayed with me. The place feels honest and warm.

I remember when I first stepped into Aluvihara. I have gone there many, many times —it felt like stepping into another world. The caves are cool and quiet, and the old stone walls still carry the weight of history. This is where Buddhist monks wrote down the Tripitaka for the first time,(In Buddhism, we have the Vinaya,Abhidharma and Sutra three pitakas) more than 2,000 years ago. You can see faded paintings, rock inscriptions, and even little meditation chambers. Many guests tell us they feel peaceful the moment they arrive.

2. Gedige Temple – Nalanda historic places in Matale

Do you know?This is the real center point of SriLanka.It is very close to our homestay.Tucked away near Nalanda, this temple always feels like a secret waiting to be discovered.Yes it is a secret place. It’s built of stone and has both Hindu and Buddhist features in its design.Lot of people believe it is close to Hindu culture. I once sat on the steps here for nearly an hour, just listening to the wind through the trees. Not a soul around.Honestly, If you love quiet, mysterious places, this one is worth the detour.

3. Sri Muthumariamman Kovil – historic places in Matale

This one’s hard to miss if like know about SriLanka and about mixed culture .I think this is a good place—it’s right in Matale town and full of color and energy. You can see the festival season here.During the festival, the whole area comes alive with music, dancing, and rituals like firewalking. . I always admire the detailed carvings—it’s like the tower tells its own story.

4. Padivita Ambalama- historic places in Matale

This is just a small resting shelter,that concept most famous one in SriLanka. But it’s got soul. It was once used by travelers passing through the area.It is a relaxation place because people traveled on foot in ancient times. I often imagine people stopping here after a long walk,with more tired sharing a meal,chatting with other people or just sitting in the shade. It’s one of those simple spots that connects us to the past in such a human way.

5. McDowell Fort- historic places in Matale

I found McDowell Fort by accident during one of my walks. It’s a small British-era fort, half-ruined, standing quietly on a hill. You can still see some big stone walls and look out over the valley below.If you love to watch at sunset,I suggest this is a good place for it. The light turns golden,red mixes with orange color and soft. It’s a lovely,beautiful and relaxing place to sit and reflect.

6. Manikdena Archaeological Reserve- historic places in Matale

This place feels like a hidden jungle city. Trees have grown over old walls and staircases. You’ll need good shoes, but if you enjoy exploring and imagining what life was like centuries ago, Manikdena is full of little surprises. I always tell guests to go slow and keep their eyes open—there’s history under every stone.

Anuradha Arana isn’t a tourist attraction—it’s a quiet home for monks who live in deep silence. I’ve taken guests here who wanted to escape the noise of modern life, and stay with nature and quiet. Not far from Sigiriya,it is very close this place is wrapped in forest and rock. The path winds past large boulders, and everything feels sacred.Very beautiful temple. Visitors are welcome, but you’re expected to walk quietly and respectfully. Some of our guests have told me this was their favorite stop of the whole trip.

9. Sindakatti Sri Kumaran Kovil- historic places in Matale

A small Hindu temple with a big heart. It’s not fancy or famous, but it’s real. Locals come here every day. You might hear the gentle ring of bells,with nice sounds always smell fresh incense, and even be invited in for a blessing. To me, that’s the beauty of it—it’s alive, not a museum.

10. Kiri Amma’s Sacred Spring- historic places in Matale

This is a special place for many women in the area.located close to Laggala town. The spring is cool and clean, and people believe it’s protected by a goddess. I’ve seen women come here to pray for good health, babies, or blessings. The whole place feels gentle and respectful.

11. Dambulla Cave Temple- historic places in Matale

If you’ve never seen it before, prepare to be amazed.This is a very special place and the most famous place among many guests. The cave temple is filled with paintings and over 150 Buddha statues. The walls seem to whisper stories. I remember once seeing a child just stand there, wide-eyed and quiet.It is amazing. That’s the kind of place this is.

12. Dambulla Golden Temple- historic places in Matale

Just below the cave,dont miss this place a giant golden big Buddha sits watching over the town.It is a new one not a historical one It’s joyful, busy, and full of people making offerings or snapping photos.. It’s a bright, happy place.

13. Pidurangala Rock- historic places in Matale

 This is a very famous place among all guests.If you’re up for a bit of a climb, the top of Pidurangala is worth every step. From there, you can visit amazing  perfect view of Sigiriya it is amazing .It is  a dream for all guests .Rock rising out of the jungle. I always tell people to go at sunrise or sunset.It is very special all guests definitely try for sunrise or sunset  You’ll see the sky turn soft orange, and everything feels still and sacred.

14. Sigiriya Rock Fortress- historic places in Matale

This one’s the crown jewel of our area. An ancient fortress built on top of a massive rock,looks like a sky palace with beautiful frescoes, mirror walls,  royal gardens and water garden and a big water canal . Climbing it takes some effort, but standing at the top feels like standing at the edge of history.

15. Nalanda Reservoir & Dam- historic places in Matale

Mornings here are my favorite.For special tips you can visit the same road to two places, this place and Nalanda Gedige it is a good plan for you. The water is smooth like glass, and the sky is full of soft colors.Nature is very beautiful. You’ll see local fishermen in their canoes, birds flying low,especially you can see kingfishers and sometimes a group having breakfast under a tree. It’s not touristy,no more people there and that’s what makes it special.

16. Ibbankatuwa Reservoir & Ancient Burial Site- historic places in Matale

Near the reservoir is a burial site over 2,500 years old.It is a very ancient one in SriLanka. Walking through it, I always feel humbled. People lived,culture,their habits, worked, and loved here long before us. It’s a quiet place,and close to Kurunegala Dambulla main road but if you stop and listen, it speaks.
